How is the Dart River different from the Shotover?
It is a scenic wilderness trip rather than a canyon thrill ride. You get two hours on a braided, glacier-fed river inside Mt Aspiring National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Area, with driver-guide commentary on Māori history, the Greenstone Trail and the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit filming locations.
Does it leave from Queenstown or Glenorchy?
The boat departs from the Dart River base in Glenorchy. Booking the option with transfers makes it a round trip of about four hours from Queenstown; self-driving to Glenorchy makes it about two. Check in at the base 15 minutes before departure.
Who is allowed on the Dart River?
Dart River Adventures states that it is the only jet boat operator permitted to operate on the Dart. This site has not independently verified that concession.
Are there age or height limits?
Children must be at least one metre tall and accompanied by a paying adult. The trip is listed as unsuitable for children under five, for pregnant women, for people with mobility impairments and for anyone under 100 cm.
What should I bring, and could the trip be moved?
Comfortable shoes, warm clothing, sunglasses and a hat. Water and windproof jackets, life jackets and the safety briefing are provided. The departure needs a minimum of eight people; if that is not met you are moved to the next available departure or refunded.
