KJet: One Hour, Two Rivers

Twenty-five minutes on the water for the canyon run at Arthurs Point. The other rides vary a lot: KJet from the Main Town Pier runs a full hour, Thunder Jet from Steamer Wharf runs thirty minutes, the Skippers Canyon trip is about three hours in total with thirty of those minutes on the boat, and the Dart River wilderness trip gives you two hours of jet boating. Prices on this site start at $56 for the thirty-minute Thunder Jet ride and run to $283 for the full-day Dart River trip with canoeing and lunch. It differs sharply between operators, which catches families out. Shotover Jet requires a minimum height of 1.0 metre, rising to 1.2 metres when the river is high. KJet has no height restriction and a minimum age of two. Skippers Canyon Jet sets a minimum age of three, and the Dart River trips require children to be at least one metre tall and five years or older. The rafting combinations have much stricter limits again.

Some spray, yes, particularly during the spins. It is nothing like rafting, and you stay in your own clothes rather than a wetsuit. That depends on the operator, and it is the single most common surprise. Shotover Jet allows only forehead-mounted hands-free GoPros: handheld cameras, phones and loose items stay in the lockers at the base. KJet and Thunder Jet let you bring your own camera or GoPro at your own risk, and Thunder Jet provides a locker for valuables.

Yes. The Queenstown jet boats run year-round and in the rain — KJet states 365 days a year — and several fit heated handrails for the colder months. Every operator listed here runs a safety briefing before departure and provides life jackets, and each publishes its own restrictions — on pregnancy, back problems, minimum height and, for the rafting trips, weight and swimming ability. Those restrictions are listed on each tour page and are worth reading before you book rather than at the jet base. Shotover Jet runs a twenty-five minute ride through the Shotover canyons from a base at Arthurs Point, and describes that canyon access as exclusive. KJet runs an hour from the Main Town Pier in Queenstown across Lake Wakatipu and into both the Shotover and the Kawarau.
