Which Queenstown Jet Boat Is Right for You?

Queenstown sells nine jet boat and river rides through a single booking platform, and from the outside they look like the same product at different prices. They are not. The gap between the cheapest and the dearest is five times the fare, and almost none of that is speed — every operator here quotes a top speed between 80 and 95 km/h, and every one of them spins the boat through 360 degrees.

What separates them is how long you are on the water, which river you are on, and whether anyone has to drive you there.
Start with how much time you have
This is the question that eliminates most of the list, and people usually ask it last.
If you have under two hours in total, you want a ride that leaves from the town centre. That means KJet from the Main Town Pier (one hour on the water) or Thunder Jet from Steamer Wharf (thirty minutes). Neither needs a car or a transfer.
If you have about two hours, the Shotover canyon run at Arthurs Point fits: twenty-five minutes on the water, ten minutes’ drive each way, plus check-in and the briefing.
If you have half a day, the Skippers Canyon trip (three hours) and the rafting combinations (four to four and a half hours) open up.
If you have a full day, the Dart River trips from Glenorchy become sensible, and the drive up the lake becomes part of the point rather than an overhead.
Then decide whether you want a gorge or a view
The second real fork is what kind of river you want to be on.
The Shotover canyons are the tight, walled version: grey schist standing close on both sides, the boat running within a metre of the rock. Two operators reach them. Shotover Jet runs the lower canyon from Arthurs Point in twenty-five minutes and describes that access as exclusive. Skippers Canyon Jet runs the upper canyon, which is narrower still, for thirty minutes at the end of a two-and-a-half-hour road trip.
The Kawarau and Lake Wakatipu are the open version: wider water, longer sightlines, more distance covered. KJet’s hour takes in the lake plus both rivers; Thunder Jet’s thirty minutes stays closer to town.
The Dart is neither. It is a braided, glacier-fed river running into Mt Aspiring National Park, and the trip is built around wilderness and commentary rather than canyon walls.

Best all-round: KJet, $84, one hour. The most time on the water of any ride you can walk to, across a lake and two rivers, at the second-lowest price on the list. It also has by far the largest review count of any jet boat here, and the loosest restrictions — no height limit, minimum age two. Best for the canyon itself: Shotover Jet, $113, twenty-five minutes. Short and not cheap, and the operator describes its access to that stretch of gorge as exclusive — no other ride in this catalogue runs it. The restrictions that decide it for families
These differ far more than the marketing suggests, and they are the most common reason a booking has to be changed.
- KJet — no height restriction, minimum age two, must fit a life jacket (4XL is the largest).
- Thunder Jet — no height restriction; not suitable under two.
- Skippers Canyon Jet — minimum age three.
- Shotover Jet — minimum height 1.0 m, which the operator says can rise to 1.2 m when the river is high.
- Dart River — minimum one metre and five years old.
- Rafting combinations — minimum age thirteen, 40 kg minimum and 120 kg maximum, and you must be able to swim in moving water.

Is the Shotover canyon run worth it?
It is the question people actually search, so: yes, if you want the gorge, and no if you are buying minutes. Twenty-five minutes at $113 is the worst value per minute on this list and the best access to the thing the river is famous for. The people who come away disappointed are usually the ones who expected an hour.
One thing to know before you drive out there: handheld cameras and phones are not allowed on board at all. A forehead-mounted GoPro is the only camera permitted, and everything else goes in a locker at the base.

Can I do more than one in a day?
Yes, and the combinations that work are the ones with different characters: the twenty-five-minute canyon run in the morning and the hour on the lake in the afternoon, for instance. Two canyon rides in a day is a lot of the same thing.
