Skippers Canyon Jet Boat Tour: Is It Worth the Trip?
Three hours door to door, about 25 minutes of it on the boat. What the Skippers Canyon trip includes, what it costs, who it suits and who should book something shorter.
The Skippers Canyon Jet trip is three hours from Queenstown, and about 25 minutes of that is on the boat. The rest is a ride up a hand-cut gold-rush road with a driver who talks you through it.
That ratio decides whether it suits you. If you want the most jet boating you can get, book something else. If a canyon road and a gold-mining story sound like the point of a morning, this is the one.

What the trip is made of
It is two different outings in one booking.
The road
Skippers Road is nothing like a sightseeing drive. It cuts across steep mountain slopes into a canyon that is still largely untouched, with sharp corners, narrow stretches and long drops on the open side.
Miners built it between 1883 and 1890 to reach the goldfields on the upper Shotover. Heritage New Zealand lists it as a Category 1 historic place. On the tour you ride as a passenger, and the driver tells stories about the miners and the valley. For many people this is the part they did not expect to like.
The river
At the river the pace changes completely. You get fitted with a life jacket, the crew explains how to sit and hold on, and then the boat accelerates through the upper Shotover with tight bends, close passes by the canyon wall and 360-degree spins.
The operator quotes speeds above 80 km/h and a series of spins. That is what the boat can do, not a promise that every stretch runs flat out. What you remember is the combination of speed and a canyon this remote.
What happens on the day
- Meet in town. Tours leave from the Camp Street side of the Station Building. The operator asks you to arrive at least 10 minutes before departure. Use the toilet before you board, because there is no chance once the bus is on the road.
- Drive into the canyon. The route climbs out of Queenstown and joins Skippers Road. The commentary covers the history and geography. Expect winding sections and views down into the canyon.
- Kit up. At the river you get life jackets, spray jackets if you want them, and a briefing on seating and holding on.
- Ride the upper Shotover. About 25 minutes of fast acceleration, close canyon passes, sharp turns and spins.
- Return to Queenstown. You come back on the same road with the same guide. Plan on three hours in total rather than squeezing it between bookings.
The order of any stops and their number can change with conditions.
How intense is the boat ride?
It is a real jet boat ride. Expect:
- fast acceleration on the open stretches
- close approaches to the rock walls
- sharp turns around bends
- 360-degree spins
- spray and a lot of wind
The canyon makes the speed feel higher. Eighty km/h in open country is manageable, and the same speed a metre from a rock face is not. There are calmer stretches too, where you can look around.
Do you get wet?
Usually you get spray, mostly during the spins. The operator says passengers can get splashed but are not normally soaked, and spray jackets are available. If staying completely dry matters to you, this is the wrong activity.
Is Skippers Road dangerous?
It has the reputation, and part of it is earned. Sections are narrow, unsealed and exposed, with steep drop-offs and little room to pass. The Department of Conservation says only experienced drivers should attempt it and that it is not a road on which to learn gravel driving.
Sitting in the tour vehicle is a different thing from driving it yourself. You do not have to arrange transport, and a driver who does this road daily is at the wheel. It does not remove the exposure, though. If cliff-edge roads or travel anxiety bother you, you may find the drive hard.
Can you drive your own rental car?
No. The operator advises against self-driving, and rental car agreements in Queenstown do not insure Skippers Road. The Department of Conservation also says rental vehicles are generally prohibited beyond Skippers Saddle. Use the included transport.
The gold-rush history behind the scenery
Gold discoveries on the Shotover in 1862 sent miners into these mountains. At its peak Skippers had a school, a hotel and shops. Getting supplies in over a pack track was so difficult that the road, cut through solid rock by hand, became one of the great jobs of the era.
The landmark most people ask about is Skippers Suspension Bridge, completed in 1901. It is about 96 metres long and stands around 91 metres above the river. It improved access to a settlement whose rush had mostly passed.
The standard trip is not a heritage tour of Skippers township and does not guarantee a stop at the bridge. If a particular landmark matters to you, ask the operator whether it is on your departure.
Parts of the canyon were also used for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, and the Department of Conservation links it to the Ford of Bruinen scenes. Do not count on the tour visiting filming sites or giving you time to walk them.
Skippers Canyon Jet or Shotover Jet?
They run on different sections of the same river, and they suit different mornings.
| Skippers Canyon Jet | Shotover Jet | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Road trip plus jet boat | A focused canyon ride |
| River section | Upper Shotover, Skippers Canyon | Shotover canyons at Arthurs Point |
| Boat time | About 25 minutes | About 25 minutes |
| Whole outing | 2.5 to 3 hours | Shorter, about 1 to 1 hour 45 minutes |
| Departs from | Central Queenstown | Arthurs Point, 10 minutes’ drive out |
| Best for | Scenery, history and adventure | Concentrated thrills |
The boats are close in speed. What differs is what you get either side of the water. Choose Skippers Canyon Jet if you want a remote landscape and a guided road. Choose Shotover Jet if you want the famous canyon ride without committing three hours.

What it costs
| Ticket | Operator fare (NZD) |
|---|---|
| Adult | NZ$229 |
| Child, 3 to 15 | NZ$109 |
| Family, 2 adults and 1 child | NZ$458 |
| Each additional child with a family | Child rate |
Two adults and two children at those fares come to NZ$567. On GetYourGuide the tour starts from $118 per person in US dollars. Compare the same departure and passenger type before you pay, and check that return transport is included.
What the ticket covers
The guided road trip with commentary, about 25 minutes of jet boating, return transport from central Queenstown, life jackets and spray jackets. You are paying for the whole outing, so dividing the fare by minutes on the water makes it look worse than it is.
Is it good value?
It depends on what you want from the morning. If you only want fast water, a shorter ride does that more efficiently. If you would enjoy the road, the history and a remote canyon, you get two activities for the price of one booking.
Cancellations
The operator says cancellations within 24 hours of departure and no-shows are not refundable. Third-party terms can differ, so read the conditions on your booking.
Getting to the meeting point
Meet at the Station Building, 43 Camp Street, on the Camp Street side by the bus stop, ready 10 minutes before departure. If you are driving into town, allow time to find parking and walk over, especially in holiday periods. You do not need a car for the trip itself.
When it runs
The operator’s regular timetable:
| Season | Departures |
|---|---|
| October to April | 8:30 am, 12:00 pm, 3:30 pm |
| May to September | 9:00 am, 1:00 pm |
These are scheduled times, not a guarantee of seats on any day. River conditions, weather and road access can change a departure.
Which departure is best?
A morning departure leaves your afternoon free and gives you room to move if the tour has to be rescheduled. Midday suits a slow start. In winter, early departures are cold, so dress for it. No time of day guarantees better photographs, because the light depends on the season, the cloud and the sun’s angle on the canyon walls.
Children, and who should skip it
Children aged 3 to 15 travel on child tickets, and each must be at least 1 metre tall. Those are two separate requirements.
A three-year-old can meet the rules and still find a narrow mountain road and sudden boat turns frightening. The outing is up to three hours, with a short boat section. Consider wind, cold and noise, and whether your child will follow safety instructions. For younger children, contact the operator before booking.
Who should avoid it
The trip combines a winding road and a fast boat, and neither suits everyone. The operator says pregnant passengers cannot take part in the bus or boat tour, and it advises against taking part with a back injury. Tell the operator about any other injury. If you have neck problems, recent surgery or significant mobility limits, ask the operator and your doctor.
Motion sickness
There are two kinds of movement: repeated turns on the road and quick changes of direction on the river. Either can be uncomfortable if you are prone to motion sickness.
Accessibility
Do not assume the vehicle access, the river landing and the boat boarding are step-free. If you have mobility needs, contact the operator about vehicle access and boarding help.
What to wear and bring
The canyon is cooler than town, and moving fast on open water makes it colder again. Dress for the wind rather than the temperature on your phone.
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Warm layers | Wind makes the ride feel colder |
| Windproof jacket | Useful on the road and the river |
| Sunglasses | Wind and spray |
| Closed footwear | Boarding and walking near the river |
| Sunscreen | UV can be strong on cool days |
| Water | The whole trip lasts several hours |
| Gloves and a warm hat | Winter departures |
The operator supplies life jackets and has spray jackets available. For more on layers by season, see what to wear on a Queenstown jet boat.
Photos
The operator allows cameras and GoPros at your own risk, with seating instructions for anyone using a selfie stick. Use a secure mount or strap, because loose equipment can be dropped or damaged. Belongings can stay locked on the tour bus during the boat ride. The road drive gives you calmer chances at landscape photographs than the boat does.
Winter, rain and cancellations
Departures run through the year on a reduced winter timetable. Light rain on its own does not usually stop jet boating. Unsuitable river levels, poor visibility, ice or unsafe road conditions can lead to changes or cancellation, and the operator has to judge the road as well as the river.
If you have only one day in Queenstown, book the trip early enough that a weather change leaves you a second date. Before you pay, check whether an operator cancellation brings a refund or a new date. Our guide to the best time for a Shotover jet boat ride covers the seasons.
Is it worth it?
Yes, if you want a whole Queenstown outing more than the longest ride on the water. The road, the history and the landscape are what make it distinctive, and the boat is the finish.
Who will like it most
Travellers who enjoy dramatic landscapes, photographers, couples after a memorable half-day and families whose children meet the limits. It is also a sensible way to see Skippers Canyon without driving the road yourself.
Who should book something else
Anyone short on time, anyone who dislikes cliff-edge roads, and anyone who wants more of the day on the water. A short canyon ride at Shotover Jet or an hour on KJet fits those better.
The trade-off
Three hours sounds like a long jet boat ride, and only about 25 minutes are on the boat. Set that expectation before you book. If you expect three hours of river, you will be disappointed.
Skippers Canyon Jet suits three free hours and an interest in the road. The tour page has the full details and current availability.
