Shotover Jet vs Skippers Canyon Jet

Same river, different canyons. Shotover Jet is 25 minutes in a narrow gorge from Arthurs Point. Skippers Canyon Jet is a three-hour road trip with 25 minutes on the boat.

Updated October 2026

You can spend 25 minutes cutting through a narrow canyon in one of Queenstown’s red jet boats, or three hours in a remote gold-rush valley that ends with an equally fast boat ride. Both are on the Shotover River, both quote 360-degree spins, and both put 25 minutes on the water.

They are not interchangeable. Shotover Jet is a short, concentrated canyon ride from Arthurs Point, about 10 minutes from town. Skippers Canyon Jet drives you up a historic mountain road first and then runs the upper river. For most first-time visitors who mainly want jet boating, Shotover Jet is the better default. Skippers is the better pick if the road is part of what you want.

Other Experiences

Other experiences you might enjoy

Other experiences around Queenstown and the Shotover, if you are building a day around the ride:

The biggest difference is the day, not the speed

Shotover Jet is the concentrated version. You board a red boat at Arthurs Point and head straight into narrow canyons where the rock walls make the speed feel higher. Everything is built around the ride.

Skippers Canyon Jet starts long before the river. You follow a road cut into steep mountainsides during the gold rush, with commentary on the landscape and the history. The boat is the finish.

So with Shotover Jet you are paying for the canyon ride. With Skippers you are paying for a guided outing and the ride. Neither is automatically better value, because they sell different things.

Which has the better scenery?

Shotover Jet: rock walls close enough to touch

The canyons near Arthurs Point are narrow, and the boat runs close to the rock. Looking up at the walls is the point, more than admiring distant mountains.

Shotover Jet holds exclusive commercial access to this section, which is why no one else can offer the same ride. The business was established in 1965 and is owned by Ngāi Tahu, whose connection to Kimiākau, the Shotover River, goes back centuries.

Best for: close-up canyon drama and photographs of boats dwarfed by rock.

Skippers Canyon Jet: remote mountains and the upper river

The road winds through steep slopes into remote country, past scenery tied to the Otago gold rush. On the water the boat enters the upper Shotover canyons, which are a different stretch of river from the Arthurs Point run. You see the river from above on the drive and from the water on the boat.

Best for: wide mountain views, a remote river and history.

Verdict

Shotover Jet surrounds you with canyon wall. Skippers Canyon Jet gives you a broader scenic journey around the river.

Which ride is more thrilling?

On paper the speeds are close: up to 90 km/h for Shotover Jet and over 80 km/h for Skippers. Both have fast acceleration, sharp turns and spins. The quoted top speed tells you little, because the canyon changes how speed feels. Walls flashing past and a narrowing river make any speed more intense.

Does Shotover Jet do more spins?

Neither operator guarantees a set number of spins on every trip. The number and intensity depend on the skipper and the river. Be wary of any comparison that promises a specific number, and choose on scenery, the whole outing and convenience instead.

Verdict

Shotover Jet wins for concentrated excitement, with little else competing for attention. Skippers Canyon Jet is two adventures combined, and the mountain road may be as memorable as the boat for people who like exposed roads and rugged country. The upper Shotover ride is not gentle, though.

Which gives you more time on the water?

They are level. Shotover Jet’s ride is about 25 minutes, and the operator suggests allowing about an hour at the base if you drive yourself, or 1 hour 45 minutes with the return shuttle. Skippers Canyon Jet also quotes 25 minutes on the boat inside a 2.5 to 3 hour outing.

Some third-party listings say 30 minutes for Skippers. The operator’s own tour page and FAQ both say 25, so that is the figure to plan on.

Does the longer Skippers trip mean a longer boat ride?

No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. The extra time is the drive in and out of the canyon. If you love landscapes, that is a benefit. If you want as many minutes as possible on a jet boat, it will disappoint.

For more time on the water, look at KJet, which runs about an hour from the town pier, or one of the longer Dart River trips. Our Shotover Jet vs KJet guide compares the first two.

Which is better value?

The operators’ published adult fares:

TicketShotover JetSkippers Canyon Jet
AdultNZ$199NZ$229
ChildNZ$109NZ$109
Family packageNZ$507 (2 adults, 2 children)NZ$458 (2 adults, 1 child)
2 adultsNZ$398NZ$458
2 adults, 2 paying childrenNZ$507NZ$567

Two adults pay NZ$60 more at Skippers. That buys the guided road journey, the commentary and the return transport from Queenstown.

The Shotover Jet family package suits a family with two children who qualify for child fares. Eligible children under five ride free with a paying adult, subject to height and other limits, which can change the maths.

A better way to compare

Do not divide the fare by minutes on the boat. Ask what you get. Shotover Jet gives you exclusive canyon access and a short visit. Skippers adds a guided drive through a remote heritage landscape. If you would pay for a Skippers Canyon sightseeing trip on its own, the extra NZ$30 per adult is easy to justify. If the road does not interest you, it is harder to.

Are cheaper tickets available?

Booking platforms sometimes list prices below the standard operator fare, depending on the date and conditions. Compare the final checkout price, and check that the ticket has the same transfers and cancellation terms. Our price comparison lays out the options across all the rides.

Verdict: Shotover Jet is the simpler purchase if you want jet boating. Skippers Canyon Jet can be better value if you want both the road and the boat.

Getting there

Shotover Jet

The base is at 3 Arthurs Point Road, about 7 km from central Queenstown and roughly a 10-minute drive. There is free parking on site. Check in 30 minutes before your departure. The base has toilets, seating, lockers and a place for non-riders to watch the boats.

A complimentary return shuttle runs from the Station Building at 25 Shotover Street on selected departures. Reserve it when you book and check in 45 minutes before the boat leaves. Allow about 1 hour 45 minutes for the whole trip. Not every departure has a shuttle.

Skippers Canyon Jet

The meeting point is the Station Building, 43 Camp Street, at the bus stop on the Camp Street side. Be ready 10 minutes before departure. Transport is included in the fare.

The operator advises against driving yourself, and rental cars are not insured on Skippers Road. The included transfer is part of the value.

Verdict

Shotover Jet is easier for a short, simple outing. Skippers Canyon Jet is easier if you want to see the remote canyon without arranging a road trip yourself. If you dislike winding, exposed mountain roads, choose Shotover Jet.

Which is better for families?

Under-5 fareFree if eligible, with a ticketChild fare from age 3
Child fare ages5 to 153 to 15

A toddler

Shotover Jet may be the only option for a child under three, as long as they meet the height minimum and the operator’s other conditions. The standard minimum is 1 metre, and the operator can raise it to 1.2 metres when conditions need it. Skippers sets a minimum age of three. If your child is near either threshold, check with the operator before booking.

Ages 5 to 12

Both can suit an adventurous child. Shotover Jet is shorter and has facilities at the base. Skippers is more varied, but three hours with an exposed mountain drive can tire younger children.

Teenagers

Pick Shotover Jet if the priority is fast manoeuvres, and Skippers if the family likes exploring and wants something larger than a short ride.

Verdict: Shotover Jet suits most families with younger children or a packed day. Skippers Canyon Jet suits families with older children who like scenery as much as excitement.

Safety, restrictions and health

Both are commercial jet boat trips with high speeds and sudden changes of direction, and neither is risk-free. Life jackets are supplied, passengers get a safety briefing, and skippers set how the boat is run for conditions.

Pregnancy

Neither operator accepts pregnant passengers on the jet boat. Skippers also says pregnant passengers cannot take part in its bus and boat trip.

Back and neck problems

Both ask passengers with back, neck or other relevant conditions to contact them before booking. Sudden acceleration and changes of direction put physical demands on you, and Skippers adds a long drive on an unsealed mountain road. If you have a current injury or recent surgery, get medical advice and talk to the operator about your situation.

Mobility

Shotover Jet has accessible parking and facilities at the base. If you need help getting in or out of the boat, contact the operator in advance. Its published policy asks for two accompanying, paying support people when boarding assistance is needed. For Skippers, confirm that the road transport, river access and boarding can work for you before buying.

Fear of heights

This is where they differ most. On Shotover Jet you are at the bottom of a canyon. On Skippers you travel a narrow road above steep drop-offs first. If exposed roads bother you, Shotover Jet is the more comfortable choice.

Rain, winter and river conditions

Neither trip is guaranteed in all weather. Shotover Jet generally runs in light rain, but heavy rain, flooding or unsuitable river conditions can lead to delays, a changed route or cancellation. The operator assesses the river daily and posts updates, including height restrictions.

Skippers Canyon Jet has to consider both the river and the access road, so mountain weather and road conditions matter as well as river levels. Its regular departures are:

SeasonTimes
October to April8:30 am, 12:00 pm, 3:30 pm
May to September9:00 am, 1:00 pm

Availability still needs checking for each date. If you are in Queenstown for several days, book your jet boat early, particularly Skippers, whose departures are less frequent and take up more of the day.

What to wear

Both expose you to wind and some spray, and moving fast feels colder than standing on the bank.

Shotover Jet: a warm layer, a waterproof jacket when appropriate, secure footwear and sunglasses. Add gloves and a hat in winter. The boats have heated handrails, but the operator advises bringing your own waterproof outer layer rather than relying on a supplied spray jacket.

Skippers Canyon Jet: warm, comfortable clothing for several hours in the mountains. The operator recommends a warm jacket, sunglasses and sun protection in summer, plus gloves and a hat in winter. Spray jackets are available for the boat. Bring water, and use the toilet at the Station Building before you leave.

Our guide to what to wear on a Queenstown jet boat goes into seasons.

Photographs and video

The rules differ.

Shotover Jet: handheld cameras are restricted while the boat is moving. Approved hands-free action cameras, such as a GoPro on a forehead strap or clipped to a hat, are allowed. Chest mounts, wrist mounts and selfie sticks are not. Small personal items must stay in pockets while moving, and you may be able to photograph when the boat is stopped and the driver agrees. Official photo and video packages have been offered, but availability varies by departure, so check at reception.

Skippers Canyon Jet: cameras and GoPros are allowed at your own risk, with seating instructions for anyone with a selfie stick. The drive gives you more varied landscape subjects. Do not assume every historic viewpoint is a scheduled photo stop.

Skippers is better for landscape photographs because of the road. Shotover Jet is better for action shots of boats between canyon walls. On either, follow the skipper instead of risking a camera during a manoeuvre.

Which fits your Queenstown stay?

  • One day: Shotover Jet. A short commitment makes it easy to add lunch by the lake and another activity.
  • Two or three days: both work. Shotover Jet fits a busy day. Skippers suits a morning or afternoon given to a remote landscape.
  • A week: Skippers, if you have done the headline attractions and want to go further into the mountains. It feels like an excursion more than one activity.
  • You have already done Shotover Jet: Skippers runs a different section of river and adds the road, so it is not a repeat.

Where to book

Both are on GetYourGuide, so you can compare the live price and availability side by side: Shotover Jet from $113 and Skippers Canyon Jet from $118. Shotover Jet’s shuttle runs on selected departures only, so check it on the departure you choose. Skippers includes its transfer on every departure. You can also read our Shotover Jet tour page and Skippers Canyon tour page.

What to check before you pay

Check the final price, passenger age and height eligibility, the exact departure point, transfer arrangements, cancellation deadlines and whether your date has seats. Both operators publish a 24-hour cancellation deadline for ordinary customer cancellations. Weather cancellations and third-party bookings can have different terms. Shotover Jet says weather cancellations qualify for a refund or a new date. For Skippers, confirm the operator-cancellation terms at checkout.

Our pick

First-time visitor: Shotover Jet. It is the signature canyon ride, with fast acceleration, narrow walls and spins, and it does not take half a day.

Scenery and something less usual: Skippers Canyon Jet. The historic road and the remote upper Shotover make it rewarding if the road sounds good in its own right.

The useful question is whether you want 25 minutes of the famous canyon, or about three hours in the mountains that include 25 minutes of it. Once you know, the choice is usually clear. If neither fits, our guide to which Queenstown jet boat is right for you covers the whole range, and the Skippers Canyon review looks at that trip alone.

Shotover Jet quotes up to 90 km/h and Skippers Canyon Jet over 80 km/h. Actual speeds vary, and the published figures do not show which ride feels more intense.

Which ride is longer?

Advance booking is recommended for Shotover Jet and essential for Skippers. Book early in summer and holiday periods.

Can you do both on the same day?

Possibly, if the times line up, but most visitors do not need to. Both are canyon boating, and another activity would add more variety.
