It is also the number that causes the most disappointment in Queenstown, for two reasons. It is shorter than people picture when they book a $113 activity, and it is much shorter than the time the activity actually takes out of their day.

The short answer

Twenty-five minutes on the river. About two hours out of your day once you count getting there, checking in and the briefing. If you want longer on the water, KJet runs an hour from the town pier for less money.

The ride is the short part. Budget roughly two hours from leaving your accommodation to getting back, and the time goes like this:

Ten minutes each way to the jet base at 3 Arthurs Point Road, unless you have booked the option that includes a return shuttle from town.
Fifteen to twenty minutes at the base: check-in, emptying your pockets into a locker, the safety briefing and getting into a life jacket.
Twenty-five minutes on the river.
Ten to fifteen minutes afterwards, because photos and video of your own run are sold at the base and most people stop to look.

None of that is padding. It is simply what the activity is, and knowing it up front is the difference between a good booking and a rushed one.

Two entries in that table deserve a second look. The Skippers Canyon trip lists three hours but only thirty of them are on the boat — the rest is a guided drive down a historic mining road, which is a large part of why people book it. And the Dart River trip doubles in length depending on whether you take the Queenstown transfer or drive to Glenorchy yourself, which is the single most common booking mistake on this site.

If you want the most time on the water

Book KJet. An hour, about 45 kilometres, across Lake Wakatipu and into both the Shotover and the Kawarau, leaving from the Main Town Pier so there is no transfer at either end. At $84 it is also cheaper than the twenty-five-minute canyon run.

The trade is that an hour spread over open water is a scenic ride punctuated by spins, where the canyon run is twenty-five minutes of more or less continuous gorge. More time is not automatically more experience.

Why the canyon ride is short

Partly the river. The stretch of the Shotover canyons that Shotover Jet runs is a finite piece of water; the boat covers it, turns and comes back. Partly the intensity — twenty-five minutes of hard cornering within a metre of a rock wall is a long time at that pitch.

And partly throughput: it is the busiest single jet boat operation on the river, and a short cycle is what lets it run continuously through the day.
