Best Jet Boat Tours in Queenstown
Shotover Jet, KJet, Skippers Canyon Jet and the Dart River Wilderness Jet compared on time on the water, price, departure point and who each one suits.
Queenstown jet boats skim over shallow water, whip through braided rivers and spin through 360 degrees with the Southern Alps behind them. Four rides do it in noticeably different ways, and choosing between them is harder than the photographs suggest.
For the classic Queenstown adrenaline ride, book Shotover Jet. For a longer ride at a lower price, KJet is the strongest value. If scenery matters more to you than canyon thrills, spend the extra on the Dart River Wilderness Jet.

The four rides side by side
| Ride | Time on the water | From (GetYourGuide) | Operator adult fare (NZD) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shotover Jet | About 25 minutes | $113 | NZ$199 | Narrow canyons |
| KJet | About 60 minutes from the Main Town Pier | $84 | NZ$149 | Value, families, convenience |
| Skippers Canyon Jet | About 25 minutes in a 2.5 to 3 hour outing | $118 | NZ$229 | Road trip and gold-rush history |
| Dart River Wilderness Jet | About 2 hours | $181 | NZ$399 (peak season) | Alpine wilderness |
The “from” prices are in US dollars on GetYourGuide. Operator fares are in New Zealand dollars, were checked in October 2026 and can change. Dart River’s NZ$399 is the published peak-season fare for October 2026 to April 2027.
1. Shotover Jet: the classic canyon ride
Best for first-time visitors, canyon scenery and a short itinerary.
Shotover Jet leaves from the base at Arthurs Point and runs into the Shotover canyons at up to 90 km/h. The walls come close in places, the driver takes the bends hard, and the 360-degree spins happen against rock. The same speed on open water would feel much tamer.
What sets it apart
Shotover Jet holds exclusive commercial access to this section of canyon. Other operators run different parts of the Shotover, but not this route. It is owned by Ngāi Tahu Tourism, whose people have a relationship with Kimiākau, the Shotover River, going back centuries.

Published fares are valid for travel through 30 September 2027 and can change.
Who it suits
Book it if you want the quintessential Queenstown jet boat ride, you like narrow canyons, or your time is limited. It is the short ride on this list. At NZ$199 for about 25 minutes it costs a lot more per minute than KJet. That is not poor value if the canyon is what you came for, but book it for the canyon and not for the length. If you would rather have an hour across several waterways, choose KJet.
Our Shotover Jet tour page has the details.
2. KJet: best value and the easiest departure
Best for families, value-minded travellers and anyone staying in central Queenstown.
KJet is the strongest all-round buy. Instead of going into one narrow canyon it runs three waterways in one trip: Lake Wakatipu, the Kawarau River and the lower Shotover. It leaves from the Main Town Pier in the middle of town. The town drops away within minutes, then the boat moves onto the rivers for shallow channels, acceleration and spins.
You see open lake, riverbanks and braided channels instead of staying inside gorges. Its predecessor, Kawarau Jet Services, began commercial jet boating in Queenstown in the late 1950s.
Why it stands out
A 60-minute ride from the pier for NZ$149 is more than twice Shotover Jet’s time on the water for NZ$50 less.
| Departs | Main Town Pier, or Frankton Marina |
| Ride length | About 60 minutes from the pier, about 40 from Frankton |
| Distance | About 45 km on the full route |
| Quoted top speed | Up to 95 km/h |
| Adult / child | NZ$149 / NZ$79 |
| Minimum age | 2 years |
| Height limit | None fixed; the life jacket must fit |
| GetYourGuide | From $84, 4.8/5 from more than 2,000 reviews |
KJet lists family packages, but current pages show different family prices, so confirm the final offer at checkout.
Families
Children aged two to four can travel free with an adult if they fit a life jacket, and ages five to fourteen pay child fares. With no fixed minimum height, it takes children other tours cannot. That does not make it right for every child: they need to cope with noise, wind, spray and sudden turns.
Check the departure point
Frankton Marina is not the same trip as the Main Town Pier. The marina departure runs about 40 minutes against 60 from the pier. For the longest ride, choose the Queenstown Main Town Pier.
For most people weighing time, price and convenience, KJet is the pick. See also our KJet page and the Shotover Jet vs KJet comparison.
3. Skippers Canyon Jet: the road and the river
Best for adventurous travellers and anyone after gold-rush history and a mountain road as well as a boat.
Skippers Canyon Jet starts long before the river. You follow a mountain road tied to Otago’s gold rush, with exposed slopes, deep valleys and views into the Shotover gorge. The drive is an attraction on its own. Then you board for about 25 minutes through the upper Shotover canyons.
It combines a guided road journey with commentary on mining history and geography, and a jet boat ride with high-speed turns. The whole outing runs about 2.5 to 3 hours from central Queenstown.
| Departs | Station Building, Camp Street side |
| Whole outing | About 2.5 to 3 hours |
| Boat portion | About 25 minutes |
| Adult / child | NZ$229 / NZ$109 |
| Minimum age and height | 3 years and 1 metre |
| Transport | Guided return road journey included |
| GetYourGuide | From $118, 4.9/5 from nearly 800 reviews |
Is it worth the extra time?
Yes, if you like scenic road trips. At the operator fare it costs NZ$30 more than Shotover Jet, and you gain a guided drive through gold-mining country. You do not gain more time on the boat: both quote about 25 minutes. Take it for the half-day outing, not for the longest ride.
It is less suited to anyone who dislikes narrow mountain roads, has little time or wants speed more than scenery. The full review is in our Skippers Canyon Jet guide, and the head-to-head with Shotover Jet helps if you are torn.
4. Dart River Wilderness Jet: the scenery trip
Best for nature lovers, photographers, couples and travellers with time.
On the Dart River Wilderness Jet the jet boat becomes closer to a wilderness expedition. It leaves from Glenorchy at the head of Lake Wakatipu and goes into the country around Mount Aspiring National Park. The scenery changes completely: wide braided channels, mountain valleys, native forest and large alpine peaks instead of tight rock corridors.
The river is glacier-fed and its channels shift with water level and sediment, so it can look quite different between seasons.
What sets it apart
You get time. The experience is about two hours, much longer than Shotover Jet or KJet. Local guides talk about the natural environment, Māori history and pounamu (greenstone). The route covers part of the Te Wāhipounamu South West New Zealand World Heritage Area.
| Departs | Glenorchy |
| Jet boat experience | About 2 hours |
| Adult fare, October 2026 to April 2027 | NZ$399 |
| Child (5 to 15) / family (2 adults, 2 children) | NZ$299 / NZ$1,097 |
| Minimum age | 3 years |
| Minimum child height | 1 metre, possibly 1.2 metres in some conditions |
| Queenstown transport | Included on designated departures |
| GetYourGuide | From $181, 4.8/5 from nearly 170 reviews |
Is it worth the higher price?
For scenery-focused travellers it can be. The operator’s adult fare is nearly twice Shotover Jet’s, and you are paying for an extended guided wilderness trip, not a short thrill ride. It feels like travelling much farther into New Zealand’s backcountry.
How much time to allow
From Queenstown, plan on roughly four hours or more including road transfers, check-in and the river. If you drive yourself, the operator recommends at least one hour each way. The lakeside road has good viewpoints, so leave extra time. Our Dart River page has more.
Book it if you are in Queenstown for several days and want a major scenic trip more than a burst of adrenaline.
Which one should you book?
No ride wins every category.
| Your priority | Our pick | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Most iconic | Shotover Jet | Exclusive narrow canyon route |
| Best overall value | KJet | 60 minutes at the lowest operator fare of the four |
| Most convenient | KJet | Departs from central Queenstown |
| Dramatic canyon scenery | Shotover Jet | Close rock walls and fast turns |
| Scenic road journey | Skippers Canyon Jet | Historic road and upper river |
| Wilderness scenery | Dart River Wilderness Jet | Alpine valleys and native forest |
| Longest guided river trip | Dart River Wilderness Jet | About 2 hours |
| Younger children | KJet | From age 2, subject to life-jacket fit |
| A short itinerary | Shotover Jet or KJet | Easier around other plans |
Our order for most first-time visitors
- Shotover Jet, the signature ride. Pick it if the Shotover canyons are why you came.
- KJet, the best all-round buy for length, convenience and family rules.
- Dart River Wilderness Jet, the scenic splurge for mountains and wilderness.
- Skippers Canyon Jet, the specialist outing, best if the historic road appeals as much as the boat.
That order reflects traveller needs. It is not a ranking from testing the rides or comparing operator safety records.
Where each ride leaves from
The departure point matters more than most visitors expect.
- Shotover Jet is at Arthurs Point, roughly a 10-minute drive from central Queenstown. A complimentary shuttle runs on selected departures and must be arranged.
- KJet leaves from the Main Town Pier, which makes it the simplest option if you are staying downtown without a car.
- Skippers Canyon Jet meets in central Queenstown for the guided return trip.
- Dart River runs from Glenorchy, with Queenstown transfers on designated departures.
What the rides cost
Operator adult fares run from about NZ$149 for KJet to NZ$399 for Dart River in peak season. The cheapest ticket is not automatically the best value. Skippers includes a large guided road trip, and Dart River is a much longer wilderness outing. When you compare two booking sites, check you have the same tour, passenger type and inclusions. Our price comparison lays the fares out.
Are they suitable for children?
Many are, but the limits differ.
| Ride | Minimum |
|---|---|
| KJet | Age 2; an approved life jacket must fit |
| Shotover Jet | No set minimum age; normally at least 1 metre tall |
| Skippers Canyon Jet | Age 3 and 1 metre tall |
| Dart River Wilderness Jet | Age 3 and normally at least 1 metre tall |
Shotover Jet and Dart River can raise their minimum height to 1.2 metres depending on conditions, and some operators want younger children with an adult. One detail is easy to miss: Dart River’s child fare starts at age 5, but the minimum age to take part is 3. If your child is 3 or 4, check the booking options before you buy.
For very young children, KJet is usually the first one to check.
Are jet boat rides scary?
They can feel intense, especially in rapid acceleration, sharp turns and spins. Professional drivers do the manoeuvres on managed routes under operator safety procedures, so being frightened by speed is not the same as losing control. The thrill differs by ride:
- Shotover Jet: the tight canyon makes the speed feel dramatic.
- KJet: fast sections and spins are mixed with broader lake and river scenery.
- Skippers Canyon Jet: the mountain road and the river both add to the adventure.
- Dart River: the weight is split more evenly between jet boating and wilderness.
None should be treated as gentle sightseeing. Under their published policies pregnant passengers cannot ride Shotover Jet or the Dart River Wilderness Jet. Anyone with back or neck conditions, recent injuries or mobility limits should contact the operator before booking. Our jet boat safety guide goes through the rules and risks.
What to wear
Expect moving air, some spray and colder temperatures than on the shore. Wear layers with a wind-resistant outer, secure footwear and, in winter, gloves and a warm hat. Sunglasses help on bright days but need a strap. KJet’s boats have heated handrails, and you should still dress for the cold. Avoid loose accessories, which can blow away. The operators supply life jackets. Our guide to what to wear on a Queenstown jet boat covers the seasons.
What happens in bad weather?
Rides can run in rain, but safe conditions depend on more than the rain in Queenstown. River levels, changing channels, debris, wind and visibility all matter. A ride can leave in light rain and still be changed because of river conditions elsewhere in the catchment. Check the booking conditions before you commit to other non-refundable plans the same day, and book your jet boat early in the stay so there is a second date available.
Book direct or through GetYourGuide?
Both can be reasonable. Booking direct can simplify communication about check-in, transfers and last-minute changes, and Shotover Jet says its published fares are the same across authorised booking channels, though cancellation arrangements can differ. A listing on GetYourGuide can be more convenient if you have other activities booked there. Before paying, compare the final checkout price, the cancellation deadline, transfers, the operator named and whether the listing covers the exact route.
A listing called a “Shotover River jet boat tour” does not necessarily go through Shotover Jet’s exclusive canyon section.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best jet boat ride in Queenstown?
Shotover Jet for the narrow-canyon classic. KJet for length, price and convenience. The Dart River Wilderness Jet for extended alpine sightseeing.
Is Shotover Jet better than KJet?
Shotover Jet is better for dramatic canyon scenery. KJet is better for longer on the water at a lower fare. Both do fast jet boating and spins on different routes.
Which is the cheapest?
Among these four, KJet has the lowest operator adult fare at NZ$149 and the lowest GetYourGuide price from $84. Promotions or combination tickets can change that.
How fast do the boats go?
Shotover Jet quotes up to 90 km/h and KJet up to 95 km/h. Those are maximums, not the speed throughout.
Which has the best scenery?
The Dart River Wilderness Jet for mountain wilderness, Shotover Jet for steep canyon walls, and Skippers Canyon Jet for road views plus the upper river.
Can you go in winter?
Yes, subject to river and weather conditions. Wear extra layers and check the seasonal schedule.
Is one ride enough?
For most first-timers, yes. Shotover Jet or KJet is a good introduction. A second ride makes sense if it is a different setting, such as the Dart.
Do you need to swim?
Not for the standard guided rides, and operators provide life jackets. If swimming ability or water anxiety is a concern, ask the operator.
