It differs sharply between operators, which catches families out. Shotover Jet requires a minimum height of 1.0 metre, rising to 1.2 metres when the river is high. KJet has no height restriction and a minimum age of two. Skippers Canyon Jet sets a minimum age of three, and the Dart River trips require children to be at least one metre tall and five years or older. The rafting combinations have much stricter limits again.

Some spray, yes, particularly during the spins. It is nothing like rafting, and you stay in your own clothes rather than a wetsuit. That depends on the operator, and it is the single most common surprise. Shotover Jet allows only forehead-mounted hands-free GoPros: handheld cameras, phones and loose items stay in the lockers at the base. KJet and Thunder Jet let you bring your own camera or GoPro at your own risk, and Thunder Jet provides a locker for valuables.
